Evaluation Question 4

In Media, the term 'target audience' refers to a specific audience for which an advertising message is designed.  A target audience is determined by several characteristics. Depending on what happens in the film, marketing teams will consider the age and gender that will be most interested and suitable for. When defining a target audience, it is important to be as specific as possible as it makes it more easier to identify who the film is aimed at. For example, the film Running Scared's target audience is young adults and over (18+) as it contains large amounts of violence that will not be suitable for those of a younger age. Therefore, haven taking these into account i have decided my target audience are teens and young adults of both genders. I haven choosen teens and young adults because they are more likely to watch TV shows or go to the cinemas and watch a movie rather than adults or the elderly. Also teens and young adults have more time on their hands and are highly likely to spend their free leisure time watching their favourite shows or a film.

A person suitable for my target audience, for example is;

Name: Kayla.
Age: 18.
Gender: Female.
Favourite food: Pizza.
Favourite restaurant: Pizza Hut.
Favourite drink: Red Bull.
Favourite video games: Sims, Tekken and Dragonball Z.
Favourite shows: Supernatural, 90210, Misfits, Vampire Diaries and One Tree Hill.
Favourite films: Home Alone, Disturbia, Amityville Horror, Gridiron Gang and Loaded.
Favourite things to do during the weekend: Hang out with friends, shopping, partying, reading, playing an instrument and watching films and shows.
Favourite place to go on holiday: China, Australia, Egypt, America and Ghana.

Kayla Cohen is a 18 year old teenager who lives in London. She is an outgoing, fun, caring party animal. She likes to listen to music, watch her favourite shows on TV, hang out with friends and meet new people. Her favourite thing to do when out with friends is either going to clubs, restaurant or cinemas. She is a big fan of horror movies and one day wishes she could take part in one. Her favourite horror films include; Amityville Horror, The Uninvited, The Eye, The Haunting Of Molly Hartley, Drag Me To Hell and One Missed Call. In her free time she likes to watch shows that have a horror sense to it such as Supernatural and Vampire Dairies, Charmed.

Kayla is a classic example of what our target audience would be and this is not only because she is a big fan of horror movies but also watching TV shows that include any signs of horror. All her favourite horror movies named above reflect on our film 'Wrapped up Revenge' since they all include the conventions of a horror film such as; ghosts, villain, victim, scary music, screams, blood, dark, haunted etc. However, most of all, The Haunting Of Molly Hartley stands out since both films are practically based on a child getting bullied at school and have other trouble.

The fact that she watches TV shows which are based or have signs of horror in them plays an important role too. This suggests that she is used to watching something to do with horror on a daily basis and is not a stranger to the genre. The TV shows (named above) too reflect on our film. Both Supernatural and Charmed are about fighting those who are evil and have powers, however, since Kayla is familiar with this story line we decided to make our film less obvious - meaning that our character is the one with the powers instead of those she classes as  'evil'. This will help to keep her interested and focused as it is different.

Instead of using an attractive male playing as a leading man (as many horror films have), we wanted to make a female the main focus in the film as females are the ones who are more emotional, more likely to share their feelings and to sympathise with. This will help our audience feel her emotions too and come to terms with the way she feels.
